Healthy You

Beat the summer heat!

Tips and tricks to staying happy, healthy, and hydrated this summer.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN

  • Make sure to wear sunscreen with at least 15 SPF, even if it is cloudy or a cooler temperature than usual.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming.
  • Wear loose, light weight and light colored clothing. This allows your body to cool properly.

STAY HYDRATED

  • Adults should drink at least 9-13 cups of water per day.
  • Drink before you get thirsty.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Drink more before, during, and after exercise.
  • Drink more if you are sick, pregnant or breast-feeding.

See a doctor if you can’t keep fluids down, suffer from diarrhea for 24 hours or more, or you are irritable, dizzy, disoriented, or much sleepier than usual. You could be dehydrated.

SWIM HAPPY

When cooling off in the pool or lake, follow these tips to swim safely.

  • Always go swimming with a buddy.
  • Parents: be sure to maintain supervision if your child is swimming. It only takes a second for a child to drown.
  • Swim in approved areas that have lifeguard supervision.
  • Young children and inexperienced swimmers should wear life jackets.
  • At home, pools should be secured with barriers to make sure children can’t access them without an adult’s permission or help.
