Clarifying Coverage for Routine Vaccinations Amid Federal Guidance Changes

Recent federal updates to childhood vaccination recommendations have led to increased discussion—and some confusion—regarding which vaccines are advised for all children versus those recommended based on shared clinical decision-making or high-risk status. While the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has modified the routine vaccine schedule, these changes do not alter insurance coverage requirements for vaccines that were previously included in the routine immunization schedule.

Health Choice Utah will continue to cover vaccines when administered according to medically appropriate indications, including:

  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
  • Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B
  • Meningococcal vaccines
  • Rotavirus
  • Dengue
  • COVID-19
  • Influenza

These vaccines remain accessible and covered without interruption for our members, even when federal recommendations now emphasize clinician–patient discussions and shared decision-making for certain immunizations.

As always, clinical judgment in determining the appropriate vaccine for a given patient—based on age, risk factors, and individual health considerations—remains essential. Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping members healthy and protected as guidance continues to evolve.
